Job description:
The Engineering Intern will support the Engineering function across Automation & Information Systems (AIS), Process Equipment Validation (PEV), Plant Engineering (PLA), Projects (PRO), Manufacturing maintenance (MAINT) or Facilities and Utilities (FAC&UTL). The placement provides structured, hands-on experience within a regulated biopharmaceutical manufacturing environment.

Role Purpose
The internship will enable the successful candidate to apply academic knowledge, develop practical engineering skills and gain exposure to engineering operations, projects, GMP, safety, quality and compliance. The intern will work under the guidance of experienced Engineering colleagues and contribute to meaningful activities and projects within their assigned area.
Your Responsibilities
- Support a strong safety, quality and compliance culture by performing assigned activities in accordance with site EHS requirements, GMP requirements, SOPs and controlled procedures.
- Support Engineering team members within AIS, PEV, PLA, PRO, MAINT or FAC&UTL, depending on the assigned placement.
- Participate in engineering projects and improvement initiatives, supporting agreed activities and deliverables under appropriate supervision.
- Support engineering activities including system improvements, troubleshooting, data analysis, technical documentation and continuous improvement initiatives, as applicable to the assigned area.
- Gain practical exposure to engineering systems, equipment and processes relevant to the assigned area. This may include automation, process equipment, plant systems, maintenance, utilities, commissioning, qualification or validation activities.
- Assist with the preparation, review and revision of SOPs, Work Instructions, training materials and other controlled engineering documentation, as directed.
- Accurately collect, review and present technical or operational data to support engineering activities and decision-making.
- Promptly escalate any observed safety, quality, compliance or procedural concerns to the appropriate supervisor or Engineering representative.
- Complete all required training within agreed timelines and maintain training compliance throughout the internship.
- Collaborate effectively with Engineering colleagues and relevant cross-functional teams.
- Participate in structured learning, coaching and development activities, and actively seek feedback to support professional development.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks, communicate progress and escalate issues when support is required.
- Remain flexible and support additional appropriate Engineering activities as required throughout the placement.

Your Profile
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a third-level undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in a relevant Engineering, Science or related technical discipline.
- Relevant disciplines may include Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic, Automation/Control, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, Process or Plant Engineering; Biotechnology; Biochemistry; Biological Sciences; or another relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
Knowledge & Experience
- No previous industry experience is required.
- Evidence of teamwork, collaboration or problem-solving through academic projects, laboratory work, extracurricular activities, previous employment or other relevant experience is desirable.
- An interest in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and a willingness to develop an understanding of GMP-regulated engineering operations.
- An interest in developing practical knowledge of engineering systems, processes, equipment and technologies.
Technical Competencies
- Ability to apply engineering or scientific principles to practical problems with appropriate guidance.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to review data, identify trends and communicate findings clearly.
- Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to complete assigned activities within agreed timelines.
- Competence in standard Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint, with the ability to learn relevant engineering and business systems.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate and well-structured technical documentation.

Internship Development & Outcomes
- The intern will work with an assigned supervisor or mentor to establish placement objectives and review progress throughout the internship.
- Where appropriate, the intern will complete a defined engineering project or improvement activity and present the outcome and key learning to the Engineering team.
- The intern may participate in cross-functional activities with Manufacturing, Quality, EHS, Validation and other site functions to understand how Engineering supports biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
