Job Summary:
This is a full time position, reporting to the Associate Director of Automation Engineering. The Automation Engineer will be responsible for set up of the automation systems for manufacturing process and R&D labs. These processes govern the production and delivery of products. The aim is to streamline the manufacturing process and make it as efficient as possible while still maintaining product quality and adhering to internal protocols and external regulations.
The automation engineer must understand the process and its needs to select the appropriate instruments to monitor and control all the necessary variables. This work includes developing and designing the concept, choosing and programming a controller and ensuring the proper communication between the actuators connected to the controller. simulating, installing, testing and managing electrical or mechanical automation and finally monitoring the automation processes on an ongoing basis.
The Automation Engineer will effectively design and develop program, test, maintain and troubleshoot various Process Automation Systems. Inclusive of Supervisory Control Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and Process Controllers (PLCs, HMIs).
Responsibilities:
- Maintain operational readiness of cGMP automation systems
- Interface with manufacturing and other end users to develop functional requirements, implement necessary changes and improve the automation system’s overall reliability and efficiency
- Design, implement and test automation solutions and strategies based on functional requirements and change control management process
- Support commissioning and qualification activities
- Follow all applicable regulatory guidelines Ensure calibration and instrumentation adherence to site, corporate and regulatory requirements, safety regulations and acting as point of contact during all internal and external audits.
- Lead project activities including interactions with equipment vendors, system integrators, and contracted personnel to implement projects involving Automation and MES systems , data historian to meet quality and technical standards
- Storage, Active Directory, Windows Server, UNIX/Linux, Networking Virtualization, Scripting preferred
- Automation infrastructure, Network Administration
- Industrial communication protocol (Ethernet/IP, Device Net, Modbus, Profibus, etc.)
- Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for OSI PI historian, MS SQL reporting and data analytics tools.
- Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to WUXI’s plants on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures.
- This could include but is not limited to programming and implementing new PLC/HMI code, changing existing PLC/HMI, Rockwell, Siemens, Ignition, Delta v system code, and monitoring backups for data integrity and compliance.
- Provide expertise input for technical instructions, best practices and standard operating procedures in the execution of calibration principles on site.
- Act as site automation SME for investigations, CAPAs and change controls as required.
- Develop, maintain and ensure site adherence to automation standards and specifications.
- Develop and lead upgrade projects, managing all aspects from concept justification to final commissioning realization.
- Develop, implement and manage third party automation service provider contracts.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical/mechanical/electrical engineering or third level qualification in Automation or Instrument Engineering or Equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a highly regulated environment- biopharmaceutical/pharmaceutical preferable.
- Ability to efficiently use current computer packages in particular Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project and Word.
- Experience with a start-up or Greenfield site.
- Experience in leading site wide instrumentation projects to completion.
- Demonstration of budgeting control and management.
- Ability to create and implement SLA’s with external vendors for calibration activities.
- Experience in management of QC Laboratory instrument for calibration requirements.
- Coaching and facilitation skills.
- An ability to work through peers and across organizational boundaries and influence at all levels in the business
